By Margaret Bauman Alaska Journal of Commerce Two enterprising state fisheries research biologists who developed their own wild Alaska salmon jerky, and the manufacturing equipment to produce it, are moving to promote what they've named “Kodiak Solstix” as the snack for the adventurer. “We think this product is capable of expanding into several different markets — sports enthusiasts, schools, folks in the travel industry who package lunches,” said Rob Baer of Alaska Spirit LLC in Kodiak. |

Fledgling wild salmon product manufacturing company Alaska Spirit LLC, Kodiak, AK, with assistance from the University of Alaska Fisheries Industrial Technology Center pilot plant, has developed Kodiak SOLSTIX™ wild salmon jerky, vacuum-packed in multilayer film. Designed as "pocket protein" for hikers, climbers, other sports enthusiasts, and vending machine sales, the product currently is being marketed to several small regional retail outlets. |

By Margaret Bauman Alaska Journal of Commerce Two Kodiak entrepreneurs determined to boost national sales of their wild Alaska salmon jerky are working with six world-class athletes who now include Kodiak Solstix in their training diets. Mark Witteveen and Rob Baer of Alaska Spirit, which manufactures salmon jerky from wild Alaska pink salmon, said April 25 that they are donating Solstix to athletes Apolo Anton Ohno, Dane Ferguson, Giddeon Massie, Allison Baver, Mike Mannelin and Wayne Johnsen. |
